Staying Resilient in an Oversaturated Market: A Personal Reflection

As I sit here today, nestled in a cozy nook in my favourite Glasgow cafe, sipping a freshly brewed cup of tea, I find myself pondering the fascinating world of acting. It’s a world that’s brought me unparalleled joy, yet, like any passionate endeavor, it has also thrown its fair share of challenges. In many ways, the world of acting is akin to this bustling cafe – teeming with hopefuls, each savoring their own unique brew of dreams, aspirations, and fears.

Acting is undeniably one of the most competitive professions out there. With drama schools churning out brilliant new talent each year and the lure of the silver screen enchanting countless souls, it can often feel like trying to shine as a single star in a vast galaxy. The market is, without a doubt, oversaturated. But herein lies the paradox of our profession: while it is oversaturated, it never really is saturated with you.

I’ve often been asked how I’ve managed to hold my ground in such a teeming industry. The truth is, the journey wasn’t always paved with roses. There were times of doubt, stretches of fruitless auditions, and moments when the weight of rejection felt almost too heavy to bear. Yet, here I stand, more in love with the craft than ever and endlessly grateful for the journey. Here’s how I managed to stay resilient:

1. Embrace Your Uniqueness:

In an industry awash with talent, it’s easy to feel like just another face in the crowd. But remember, while there might be a million actors out there, there’s only one you. Your experiences, your quirks, your strengths, and yes, even your weaknesses, make you irreplaceable. Channel this uniqueness into your roles. Let it be your superpower.

2. Rejection is Not Reflection:

It’s hard not to take rejection personally. After all, as actors, we bare our souls for the world to see. But it’s crucial to remember that rejection doesn’t reflect your worth or talent. So many variables come into play during casting – from specific looks to minute details that we’re often unaware of. Every ‘no’ is a mere redirection, not a testament to your capabilities.

3. Cultivate a Growth Mindset:

In a market as dynamic as ours, staying stagnant is not an option. See every experience, good or bad, as a learning opportunity. Attend workshops, read widely, and never stop honing your craft. Remember, every role, no matter how small, has something to teach you.

4. Network Authentically:

Networking is more than just exchanging business cards at parties. It’s about forging genuine relationships, learning from peers, and growing together. When you approach networking from a place of authenticity, you not only open doors for opportunities but also build a supportive community that can help you navigate the challenging terrains of the industry.

5. Celebrate Small Wins:

Not every victory comes with a spotlight and applause. Sometimes, it’s the silent pat on the back after a tough rehearsal or the joy of finally nailing that tricky scene. Celebrate these moments. They are the stepping stones to your larger goals.

6. Stay Grounded:

Remember why you started acting in the first place. For most of us, it was a pure, unadulterated love for storytelling. In the race to ‘make it big,’ don’t lose sight of that passion. Let it be your anchor, especially during tough times.

7. Finally, Believe in Yourself:

It might sound clichéd, but self-belief is the cornerstone of resilience. The industry will have its highs and lows, but your faith in your craft and capabilities must remain unshaken. Trust your journey and remember that every experience is shaping you into the actor you’re destined to be.

To those navigating this beautiful, chaotic world of acting, remember that while the market might be oversaturated, the world is still waiting for the magic only you can bring. Stay resilient, stay passionate, and let your unique light shine. Here’s to our shared love for the craft and the countless stories waiting to be told. Cheers!
